MCI3-B – Data Center Expansion

When DataBank initiated its ground-up expansion of the MCI3 facility, they faced complex challenges from day one. The new 6 MW data center had to be constructed adjacent to a live facility with an active generator yard and its cable bus system delivering mission-critical power throughout the campus.

Databank MCI3-B data center expansion

Early in construction, the team uncovered poor subsurface conditions that required significantly deeper-than-anticipated foundation excavations. This posed a major risk: the deeper work could destabilize or compromise the adjacent cable bus infrastructure, a linchpin for DataBank’s power reliability.

SiTESPAN’s construction team moved quickly. Rather than allow the risk to escalate or delay the project, they partnered with DataBank and the design team to develop a custom underpinning solution. This reinforcement strategy protected the live cable bus while foundations were installed, sequencing work to reduce vibrations and preserve soil integrity. Aroundthe-clock monitoring protocols were established to ensure system safety throughout.

Thanks to SiTESPAN’s technical foresight and high-stakes execution, the risk was identified and addressed early—without compromising the schedule. Despite unexpected challenges, the team delivered the expansion with no downtime, no rework, and no compromise to live systems. This project reflects exactly why the nation’s most demanding operators trust SiTESPAN: precision in complexity, and
performance under pressure.
